MIU IV Teachers of the Visually Impaired designed a full day of engaging activities for fifteen (15) students that have visual impairments as part of the Home Orientation and Mobility Experiences at School (HOMES) program. The students shared breakfast and lunch together. While learning how to make pumpkin muffins, the students used "Say When" liquid indicators and enlarged recipe cards. The students participated in various games, which encouraged peer interactions. At the end of the day, students were exchanging phone numbers and planning to keep in touch after meeting each other.
This month, MIU IV special education staff is focusing on being thankful, and demonstrating gratitude, so one of the activities the vision teachers prepared was having the students use 20/20 pens to decorate their own individual pumpkins. They identified what they are most thankful for and wrote those on their pumpkins. The staff had a wonderful time reading the comments that the students created. The final activity was sending groups of 4-5 students on a fall-themed scavenger hunt with only an enlarged map of MIU IV. This map had areas marked where specific items were located and each team had to find the objects while navigating an unfamiliar area.
The school districts with participating students were Butler, Grove City, Hermitage, Lakeview, Mercer, Moniteau, Seneca Valley and Wilmington.
The next HOMES Day at MIU IV is March 8, 2022 and we can't wait to see what our Teachers of the Visually Impaired have planned for that day!
