Overview

MIU IV’s Continuing Education Department provides a wide variety of professional development opportunities to assist area administrators, teachers, and paraprofessionals with access to professional development activities and learning experiences. Our offerings include a combination of face-to-face, hybrid and virtual (synchronous and asynchronous) learning opportunities.


Act 48 Continuing Professional Education


The MIU IV is an approved provider of Act 48 continuing professional education credits and hours for professional educators in the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania (PA). The Act 48 Data Entry Services Information Sheet and Act 48 Participant Data Form linked above are current. Other versions of these forms from prior years are no longer accepted. Annual data entry service fees for entities that are not an approved provider of Act 48 hours are set at $20.00 per educator for unlimited data entry services, or a fee of $7.00 per educator for a one-time data entry service into the Professional Educator Record Management System (PERMS).
Please note these fees will increase in the 2026-2027 school year from $20.00 to $25.00 and from $7.00 to $10.00, respectively.


For those seeking free Act 48 Courses for Pennsylvania-certified educators, the Standards Aligned System (SAS) provides free Act 48-eligible courses. To access these courses, create a free login and click on "My SAS Tool" in the upper right corner of the site. Then click on "PD Center".

Classroom Monitor Training


Act 33 of 2023 has renewed the Classroom Monitor permit for 2023-2026. All permits issued previously expired on June 30, 2023. LEAs may request this permit in TIMS. The new permit will expire June 30, 2026.


A Classroom Monitor permit allows a paraeducator to deliver learning assignments that are preplanned by a professional employee or temporary professional employee. A classroom monitor may not plan lessons or create or
grade student work.


Eligible for Classroom Monitor Permit:

  • Be at least 25 years old;
  • Have completed at least 60 semester hours or equivalent courses at an accredited college or university in this commonwealth, OR have at least three years of school entity experience as a paraprofessional and be currently employed in a school;
  •  Meet background check and clearance requirements under the School Code and Child Protection Service Law;
  • Complete classroom management training developed by an intermediate unit (IU) and approved by PDE in accordance with 24 P.S. § 12-1218

 

CPE Credit Courses


A comprehensive program of PA-approved credit courses on a variety of topics. Courses are offered in Fall, Winter /Spring and Summer sessions. Guest/Substitute Teacher Training


A great opportunity for those with a bachelor’s degree to train to become a day-to-day substitute teacher in a public school district. The online, asynchronous training will help prospective guest teachers develop the skills and understanding to become confident, capable, and qualified substitute teachers.


Mentor Teacher


A one-day workshop for new or veteran mentors, which provides processes and strategies to help mentor new teachers.


Teacher Induction


This program is designed to address the educational needs of teachers who are new to the profession or returning to education full-time and meets the state regulations for teacher induction as part of the certification requirement. Courses are designed to enlighten the teacher's awareness of skills, strategies, and activities. and information based on what current research suggests as requisite
professional practice for new teachers.
