Orientation and Mobility (O&M)
Orientation and Mobility (O&M) services are specialized instructional services provided to students who are blind or visually impaired to help them travel safely, efficiently, and independently within school, home, and community environments. O&M instruction focuses on developing skills such as spatial and environmental awareness, use of sensory information, orientation concepts, safe travel techniques, and, when appropriate, the use of mobility tools such as a long cane or electronic travel aids. Services are provided by a certified Orientation and Mobility Specialist and are individualized to meet each student's unique needs. O&M instruction supports access to educational environments and promotes independence, self-confidence, and participation in school and community activities.
