This Years Recepient

  •  Congratulations Bob!

    Mr. Robert Papa

Midwestern Intermediate Unit IV (MIU IV) honored Robert Papa with its annual Annie Sullivan Award at the Board of Directors meeting on May 24, 2017. Mr. Papa has served as a Social Worker with MIU IV for 11 years.

Papa is the 30th recipient of the Annie Sullivan Award named for Helen Keller’s teacher. The award was established by MIU IV’s Labor and Management Committee to recognize an educator who shows care, concern, and skill in helping students with special needs gain acceptance in their schools and communities. Several employees from the MIU IV organization, members of the education community, past students, and parents of past students nominated Mr. Papa.

“There are qualities that come to mind immediately when I think of Bob Papa; humble, friendly, student-centered and caring,” said Melissa Wyllie, MIU IV’s Director of Special Education. “As a social worker by profession, Bob works to help improve students’ lives. He is a true advocate for students and works to educate them in skills that will aid them in becoming successful young adults in our communities.”

“Mr. Papa has directly impacted the lives of countless students and families during his educational tenure,” remarks Greg Hajek, LEA for South Butler School District. “In particular, he has provided guidance, support, and expert role modeling to students with emotional and developmental disabilities.”

"They say that our lives are journeys and that it's a journey that we should enjoy and appreciate along the way because it's not the destination that's most important and we shouldn't be in a hurry to get to any final destination anyway," said Mr. Papa. “I have been fortunate to have had a lot of people along the way who have made my journey enjoyable and for which I'm grateful, including family, friends, and people that I've worked with.”

Midwestern Intermediate Unit IV is an educational service agency that provides programs and services to 27 school districts in Butler, Lawrence, and Mercer Counties.  As one of 29 Intermediate Units in Pennsylvania, MIU IV implements projects administered by the Pennsylvania Department of Education, the State Board of Education, the General Assembly, and the United States Department of Education.

Bob lives in New Castle. His family includes a son Philip and his wife Becky.  He also has a daughter Fina, and her husband, Greg. They have given him two beautiful granddaughters Lily 8 and Abigail 4.
