2017 Spirit Award Recipient Paula Slater

2017 Spirit Award Paula Slater

  • Paula Slater was honored at the November 15 meeting of the Midwestern Intermediate Unit IV (MIU IV) Board of Directors as the 2017 recipient of the Spirit Award.  Slater has been employed by MIU IV for 19 years as a classroom paraprofessional.

This award, presented by the Intermediate Unit’s Labor & Management Committee, was created to recognize a support staff individual who exemplifies excellence on the job, caring involvement and involvement in the community.  Mrs. Slater was nominated by her peers.

“On a daily basis, Paula goes above and beyond in her role as a paraprofessional,” said MIU IV Director of Special Education, Melissa Wyllie. “The one thing that impressed me the most when I observed Paula was her integrity in working with students.”

“Paula is dependable and dedicated to the students in our classroom,” said Carly Weaver, Special Education Teacher in an MIU IV Early Intervention Classroom. “She is a team player and always willing to help those around her.”

As a paraprofessional in MIU IV’s Early Intervention Program, Paula is responsible for assisting the classroom teacher with educational lessons and activities, students’ files and records, and maintaining a consistent classroom routine for students. She also assists students with special needs in such activities as feeding, personal hygiene, and self-care. She prepares the room for student arrival, snack time, circle time, center activities, and departure. With guidance from the classroom teachers and therapists, she works one-on-one with students to help them achieve their individualized educational goals.

Paula lives in Butler with her husband Trent. She has three children, two step-children, and seven grandchildren. Her passions include spending time with her family, bowling, and motorcycle rides with her husband. Slater serves as president of the ESPA Union at MIU IV and is the secretary for Riding for the Cure, an organization that raises money for individuals with cancer.
